The player swinging on the right is none other than Bert Smith. During the 1970's he won 3 ASA Men's Major Softball MVP awards. Smith played the outfield while winning the MVP award with 3 different teams. He hit 21 home runs in the 1973 ASA Nationals held in Cleveland, Ohio. When I started playing you heard stories on how good Bert Smith was. The best part was how he backed it all up. He was inducted into the ASA Hall Of fame in 1994.

Bert Smith did not give the opposition many chances to "pick it" in the 1973 Pick of Dixie Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn. He powered Howard's to the title by going 31-for-33 with a whopping 27 home runs. How about that HR ratio.

Something Special in 1987

During my career I had the pleasure of seeing this great country of ours more than once. I actually saw it probably 4 or 5 times over. I was able to play softball in all of the states except for Alaska. I had the chance to travel to Canada and play against the Canadians on their home turf. One time we went all the way to Saskacthewan, Saskatoon to play in the Molson Cup that they have every year. We ended up playing their all-star team twice in a really nice baseball stadium. The Canadians love their softball just as much as we do here in the states.

In the photo to the left is none other than Tom (Magnum) Selleck. Walking behind him is Dave Neale and Doug Roberson is walking in front of him. The Steeles team played Tom's Magnum all-stars in War Memorial Field in Pearl Harbour during th February 14th St Valentines Massacre tournament.

During the game against us Tom did a fine job with the bat and had a great arm playing the outfield. He burned our right fielder Ken Dain for an inside the park home run that brought the 7000 people there to a standing ovation. They love Tom in Hawaii.
